Class Notes #1

General Information, Organization, Expectations

This course is intended to provide students who are relatively new to the world of digital art and media a broad introduction to the various areas of interest within the field of study. It is not intended to be a lab or production class but rather an opportunity for each of you to learn about the fundamentals of the field and to try your hand at some basic tools as shown throughout the course.

The course has been divided into 4-week units. At the end of each unit you will have a paper or project due. Each assignment will be posted on the web with the class notes.

The Teaching Assistant for this course is RTF graduate student, Iskra Valtcheva. She will be available by email and during her office hours (TBA) to assist you with questions and with the assignments if needed. I will be available during my regular RTF office hourse shown above and by email.

It will be very important that you have access to a recent PC (Win-XP) and/or a recent Mac (OS-X). We will be looking at several different pieces of software that in some cases run equally well on both machines.

This lab (CMB 4b) is open from 0830 to 11pm almost every day. You are free to use these machines as needed on a first-come basis unless there is a class or special lab running in the lab. Note that nothing is saved. In fact, the machines will be "cleaned" of extraneous files on a regular basis. I strongly suggest that you purchase a USB flash memory device such as this 1 gbyte model. (available at any tech store - even WallMart!). These are by far the most efficient and reliable means to transport information from one computer to another.

----------- Enjoy!---------------
